The Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians Energy Roadmap
Powering our Future
The Energy Roadmap puts the Tribe in the driver’s seat for energy decisions and investments that will improve the lives of community members.
Energy is essential for the tribe's economic development, cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, and self-determination. According to the report, “Building Lithium Valley”, authored by New Energy Nexus, the region could satisfy more than one-third of today’s global lithium demand. TMDCI intends to leverage its sovereign status and strategic location to form Tribally-owned businesses or partner with private companies to spark economic development for the benefit of the Tribal community.
By developing the Energy Roadmap, the Tribe will be positioned to proactively participate in the emerging energy and lithium market in the region to generate revenue from its strategic location, create jobs and educational opportunities for its members, protect its cultural and environmental interests and mitigate the impacts of energy projects on its ancestral lands and resources. Most importantly, it will allow the Tribe to strategically engage based on an energy strategy that reflects Tribal leadership’s and the Tribal community’s energy and environmental priorities.
The roadmap provides a framework to assess energy-related opportunities that benefit the Tribe, its People, and its businesses while aligning with the Tribe’s goal of ensuring investments reflect the Tribe’s connection to the land, water, and wildlife of the Salton Sea area. Because the energy landscape (e.g. federal funding) changes often, the roadmap should be revisited at least every three years, but ideally annually.
